What is moveIn
moveIn is a free web app that calculates accessible routes in the historic centre of Venice and on the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. For every trip it compares the wheelchair, walking and ACTV waterbus routes, showing which of the city’s bridges are accessible, limited (only with a companion) or not accessible.
It is designed for people with reduced mobility, older people, families with pushchairs and anyone getting around with a shopping trolley or a wheeled suitcase. The app is developed by the Venetian company WeMoveOn srls and partly funded by the Italian Ministry of Tourism, and is available in Italian and English.
Video tutorial
In just over a minute, see how to choose your start and destination, compare wheelchair, walking and waterbus routes and follow the accessible itineraries on the map.
Where it works
moveIn has been developed and checked in these areas. The mainland, Lido, Pellestrina and the smaller islands are not covered yet.
Routes
For every route search, the app works out several solutions at once and compares them by time and distance, so you can choose the one that suits you best.
Shows routes over accessible bridges (with a ramp) and, where the route has bridges without a ramp, points you to the nearest ACTV stop and line.
The most direct walking route through calli, campi and fondamenta, with street directions and the number of bridges to cross.
Waterbuses and boat lines combined with walking stretches, showing which stops and lines to take, direction and departure times.
Features
Accessible bridges are marked in green, those without a ramp in red and limited ones (with some difficulties) in blue. The slope of the ramps on accessible bridges is shown: above 8% you need a companion.
Public transport stops and waterbuses are all accessible. moveIn shows the lines and timetables for every stop.
Ready-made themed routes, stop by stop, designed to be enjoyed by everyone.
Culture and art, health, nature and sport, services, universities and libraries, places of worship and public toilets, with full accessibility information and how to get in.
Follow the route on the map with the number of bridges and the obstacles (steps) along the way.
Found an obstacle or some data to fix? Report it from the app and help improve the map.
Accessible itineraries
The City of Venice accessible itineraries are ready-made themed routes to follow stop by stop on the map: each itinerary shows the points of interest to visit and their accessibility information, displayed in an info card.
Points of interest
moveIn shows Venice’s points of interest on the map, organised by category. Each place has a coloured icon showing its accessibility level, so you know before you leave whether you will be able to get in and visit.
When accessibility data for a place is not yet available, its card shows it as “To be checked”.
Install the app
moveIn is a web app: open it in your phone’s browser and add it to your Home screen. It opens full screen, just like an app from the store.
The project
The public-interest accessibility features and content of moveIn were created as part of the project “Venice and its lagoon: management and enhancement of tourist flows”, funded by the Italian Ministry of Tourism.
moveIn is developed and run by WeMoveOn, which builds innovative solutions for urban mobility.

moveIn brings together the 14 accessible itineraries of the City of Venice: Area Marciana, Rialto, Santa Margherita, Frari e Tolentini, Santo Stefano, San Giovanni e Paolo, Murano, Burano and Torcello, Castello Est, Ca’ d’Oro, Santa Marta, Rialto Mercato, Cannaregio Ovest and Zattere – Accademia – Salute. Each itinerary can be followed stop by stop on the map, with accessibility information on bridges and stops.
moveIn maps 461 points of interest in Venice, grouped into seven categories: Culture and art, Health, Nature and sport, Services, Universities and libraries, Places of worship and Public toilets. The colour of the icon on the map shows the accessibility level: accessible, limited accessibility or not accessible.
Partly. Venice has more than 400 bridges and many have steps, but several areas of the historic centre can be reached by wheelchair by combining accessible bridges and ACTV waterbuses with accessible boarding. moveIn calculates these routes and shows, bridge by bridge, whether the crossing is accessible.
Yes: moveIn is a free app for getting around Venice by wheelchair, with a pushchair or with walking difficulties. It shows accessible routes, bridges with ramp slopes, accessible waterbus stops, accessible itineraries and points of interest with accessibility information.
In Venice a wheelchair user gets around by combining three things: accessible bridges (with a ramp or level), ACTV waterbuses with accessible boarding and step-free walking stretches. moveIn calculates the route that combines them, shows which bridges to avoid and, when a bridge has no ramp, suggests the nearest ACTV stop and line to get around it.
In moveIn every bridge in the historic centre is classified in three states: accessible, limited accessibility or not accessible. For bridges with a ramp the slope is shown: above 8% the ramp should be used with the help of a companion.
moveIn covers the historic centre of Venice, including Giudecca island, and the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello. The mainland (Mestre, Marghera), the Lido, Pellestrina and the smaller islands are not covered yet.
moveIn is free and does not need to be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play: it is a web app that opens in the browser and can be added to your smartphone Home screen. To sign up you only need an email address, no password: you log in with a code sent by email.
No, data on bridges, routes and places may not reflect sudden changes to the streets or building works. When in doubt, signs, local rules and the actual state of places always come first. If you find an obstacle or data to fix, you can report it directly from the app.
No. moveIn is WeMoveOn’s app for accessible routes in Venice and has no connection with MoVe-In (Monitoraggio dei Veicoli Inquinanti), the Italian regional service that uses a black box to count the kilometres driven by vehicles subject to environmental restrictions. For MoVe-In, refer to your Region’s website.
